Back-to-back world champion Shericka Jackson and reigning olympic champion Hansle Parchment were the Jamaican winners on yesterday’s second and final day of the 2023 Wanda Diamond lead finals……the Pefontaine Classic at the iconic Hayward field in Eugene, Oregon.

Jackson, who was aiming to break the 35-year old women’s 200 metres world record of 21.34 seconds set by the American Florence Griffith-Joyner….came up just short at 21.57 seconds…….the 5th fastest time over the distance in history.

Jackson in winning the women’s 200 metre event completed the double having claimed the 100 metre title on Saturday…clocking an impressive 10.70 seconds.

Second spot in the meantime went to Marie-Josee Ta Lou of the Ivory Coast in a season best 22.10 seconds with the MVP Track Club trained Anthonique strawn of the Bahamas third in 22.16.

The men’s 200 metre event was won by Canadian Andre De Grasse in a season best 19.76 seconds.

Meanwhile, over in the men’s 110 metre hurdles Parchment avenged his 2nd place finish to Grant Holloway in Budapest…..storming to victory in a world leading and personal best 12.93.

Holloway claimed second place in 13.06 followed by fellow American Daniel Roberts 13.07.

Also claiming a spot on the podium was Natoya Goule-Toppin who ran a national record one-minute 55.96 seconds for third in the women’s 800 metres won by Athing Mu of the United States in a world leading, American and meet record one-minute 54.97 seconds.

Second place was won by  Keely Hodgkinson in a new British national record one-minute 55.19 seconds.

World championships bronze medalist Ruschell Clayton…..the other Jamaican to make a podium finish on the day……ended third in the women’s 400 metres hurdles in 53.56 seconds.

Janieve Russell was 4th in a season best 53.60 while the race was won by Dutch star Femke Bol in a meet record 1.98 seconds.

Just missing the podium was candace mcleod who was 4th in the flat 400 metres in 50.76 seconds behind Marileidy Paulino of the Dominican Republic….49.58.

Action in the women’s 100 metres hurdles saw world champion Danielle Williams losing for the first time in 3 races after she ended 4th in 12.47 seconds.

The race was won by world champion and record holder Tobi Amusan of Nigeria in a season best 12.33 seconds with Jasmine Camacho-quinn of Puerto Rico second in 12.38 and the American Kendra Harrison third in 12.44.

Olympic bronze medallist Megan Tapper ended in the number 5 spot with a time of 12.48 seconds.
