Civil society and environmental lobby groups to stage protest over continued closure of Blue Lagoon in Portland

Some civil society and environmental lobby groups have joined forces to stage a peaceful protest today (March 4) about the continued closure of the Blue Lagoon in Portland.

These are the Blue Lagoon Alliance, the Portland Environmental Action Group and the Jamaica Beach Birthright Environmental Movement.

The lagoon was closed last August, with barriers erected at the roadway leading to the attraction and guards stationed at the barriers, preventing access to members of the public.

The groups are upset that the popular attraction remains closed, despite initial claims from the Government that closure would have only been for two months to facilitate renovation and upgrades.

They said attempts to get information as to why the attraction remains closed have been futile, and that they fear the closure will eventually lead to privatization.

The protest is slated to begin at 12 noon, with a march along the roadway to the lagoon.

The Blue Lagoon is a designated national heritage monument overseen by the National Heritage Trust, under the Culture Ministry and the Tourism Product Development Company.
