Residents mourn passing of 12 year old boy who drowned; classmates being counselled
Residents of Musgrave Street, in Brown’s Town, St. Ann are in a sombre mood this morning, following the drowning death of a 12-year-old in the community yesterday.
The deceased has been identified as Nicholai Reid, a student at the Aboukir High school in the parish.
Reports are that around 2 PM, the student was at home with his mother who was washing clothes, when she reportedly asked him to catch water from an open tank in their yard. She theorized that he lost his balance and fell into the tank.
A neighbour, Ralston Wallace, told IRIE FM, that despite multiple attempts from both him and other community members, they could not save Nicholai.
He said the incident has left the community traumatized.
Meanwhile, counselling is being provided to the classmates of 12 year old Nicholai Reid.
Principal of Aboukir High, Denville McHugh told IRIE FM that Reid was a seventh grade student at the institution.
He noted that some of Reid’s classmates were crying this morning.
Mr. McHugh said the school’s guidance counsellor has begun offering grief counselling to the students, and it is likely that further counselling will come from the education ministry’s regional office.
