A University of the West Indies (UWI) student is to face the court today after he allegedly held a female in his room for 3 days against her will, and assaulted her.

Charged with assault occasioning grievous bodily harm is 20-year-old Matthew Hyde of Braemar Avenue, in Kingston.

The incident occurred at one of the institution’s halls of residence between Monday, February 6 and Thursday, February 9.

It is alleged that Hyde burned the young woman all over her body with a clothes iron over the three days.

Head of the St. Andrew Central division, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), Marlon Nesbeth says the student was arrested after campus police alerted the local authorities of the incident.

The Director of Public Prosecutions is to determine if the man will face other charges.

Meanwhile, the University of the West Indies’ Guild of Students has called for counselling to be provided to the affected student and others impacted by the incident.

In a release last evening, the guild said it wants a full and thorough investigation into the matter, while calling on the university to utilize the full strength of its disciplinary procedures.

It also called for academic leniency for the affected student, and for the university to release a statement outlining its intended response to the matter.

The guild said it shares the concerns expressed by the student body and supports the security forces in their efforts to address the matter.

It also urged students to share information on any similar incident happening within the university space.
