Shimona Nelson named captain of new look Sunshine Girls squad
Australian-based goal-shooter Shimona Nelson has been named captain of a new look Sunshine Girls squad that includes five newcomers to face New Zealand away in a three match series for the Taini Jamison Trophy.
Nelson who plays for the Collingwood Magpies in the suncorp super netball league is joined by her club teammate Latanya Wilson who’s been named vice captain.
The squad includes first time invitees Quannia Walker, Kimone Shaw, Abigayle Sutherland, Tafiya Hunter and Theresa Beckford who were all part of the recent gold medal winning team at the Canoc Games.
The rest of the squad is completed by Adean Thomas, Abbeygail Linton, Mischa Creary, Amanda Pinkney and Gezelle Alisson.
A statement by governing body netball Jamaica said regular captain Jhaniele Fowler and Vice-Captain Shamera Sterling were unavoidably absent due to school commitments, while other players were nursing injuries sustained or aggravated at the recent Commonwealth Games and have not yet been cleared to resume playing.
The Jamaicans who are expected to leave the island later today, will face the silver ferns in games 1 and 2 at the Glo-Box Arena on September 17 and 18 in Hamilton, before both teams meet in the third and final contest on September 21 at the event-Finda Stadium in Auckland.
