Jamaica’s leaders pay tribute to Queen Elizabeth following her death
Governor General Sir Patrick Allen and Prime Minister Andrew Holness are among world leaders paying tribute to the late Queen Elizabeth II.
The queen died this afternoon (September 8), at Balmoral Castle, in Scotland at age 96.
She reigned for 70 years.
In his tribute, Sir Patrick who is the Queen’s representative here in Jamaica, lauded the queen for her strong sense of duty and lifelong devotion to the service of others.
In line with protocol, he lowered his standard to half mast.
And, Prime Minister Holness said the world has lost a global matriarch, who was a steadying and constant force throughout many crises and periods of difficulty, adding that the queen made an immense contribution to the world in public life and was a close friend of Jamaica.
Opposition Leader Mark Golding also paid tribute to the queen, who he said was a much-respected and loved lady, a symbol of decency, stability and continuity.
Meantime, Charles who has acceded the throne, following the death of his mother-Queen Elizabeth the second, and who will be the sovereign for Jamaica, along with several other nations in the Commonwealth also paid tribute.
In a statement following his mother’s passing, King Charles the III, noted that the death of Queen Elizabeth is a moment of great sadness for the Royal Family.
Tributes have also come from Commonwealth Secretary General Baroness Patricia Scotland, and leaders of other Commonwealth countries such as Canada, Australia and India.
Reactions have also come from Jamaicans living in England.
Among them is Sammy Pryce who told Irie FM News that the sad mood of citizens is heightened by the rain and dark clouds.
