23 times grand slam winner Serena Williams stayed on course for another moment in history as she booked her spot in the round of 32 at the US Open last night.
This as the 40 year old fought hard to beat world number two Anett Kontaviet 7-6, 2-6, 6-2 in a pulsating contest that lasted nearly three hours at the Arthur Ashe stadium last night in which Williams fired 11 aces.
Meanwhile another winner on the women’s side last night was American Coco Gauff who advanced to the third round after defeating Elena-Gabriela ruse in straight sets 6-2, 7-6.
In other games world number five Ons Jabeur battled to a straight-sets win over American Elizabeth Mandlik 7-5, 6-2 , and 20th seed American Madison Keyes held on for 6-4, 5- 7, 7-6 triumph over Camili Giorgi .
On the men’s side, Nick Kyrgios survived a torrid battle against Benjamin Bozi and eventually prevailed 7-6, 6-4, 4-6, 6-4, while fifth seed Casper Rudd along with Andy Murray were also among the winners.
