82% of households damaged by Hurricane Beryl receive assistance; $608 million distributed so far

The Social Security Ministry is reporting that 82% of households that suffered damage from hurricane beryl have received reconstruction cheques under the Rebuild Jamaica initiative.

The Ministry says 6, 828 cheques valued at $608 million have been delivered to beneficiaries in all parishes as at October 15.

The highest delivery rate is in Westmoreland with 94% of households impacted receiving cheques, followed by the parishes of St. Catherine and St. James at 92% each.

The Ministry notes that it is in the process of delivering an additional 2,200 cheques valued at $200 million through the parish offices and other community locations, while simultaneously continuing the processes of verifying documentation and cheque preparation for other claimants.

In the meantime, preparations are underway to commence disbursal of second-tranche payments to householders whose houses were totally destroyed by the end of October.

The Ministry adds that it continues to carefully execute the Rebuild Jamaica programme to ensure fairness and transparency.
