3 deaths have been reported in preparation for hurricane Melissa

Three deaths and several injuries have been reported during preparations for hurricane Melissa.

Health Minister Dr. Christopher Tufton reported that one person was electrocuted, while the other 2 were killed while cutting down trees.

The southern regional health authority has extended condolences to the family of the health care worker who was killed after a tree fell on him.

Dead is Denton Patrick, an Air Condition and Refrigeration Technician assigned to the St. Elizabeth Health Department.

Dr. Tufton added that at least 13 persons suffered serious injury including to their head and chest.

Citizens are urged to exercise caution when using stairs and accessing rooftops, wear appropriate safety gear, if roofs and other structures must be accessed, and to stay clear of downed and/or exposed power lines.

They should remain indoors where possible, follow official advisories, and look out for vulnerable members of communities, including children, pregnant women, older adults, and the disabled. 

Health Centres remain closed but hospitals are open and attending to storm-related injuries.
