The Accompong Electoral Committee in St. Elizabeth has condemned Merdie Rowe’s decision to seek to block today’s Nomination Day proceedings and the May 22 Election.

Attorneys representing Mr. Rowe, who is aiming to vie for the post of Accompong Chief, noted that an injunction was filed in the Supreme Court in Kingston last week to also prevent Richard Currie from acting any further as leader.

They said that the judge, in granting the injunction yesterday, ordered that the Nomination and Election Day activities be stayed until the matter is brought up in court on June 10.

However, when IRIE FM reached out to Chief Currie and Director of the Accompong Electoral Committee, Clavie Johnson, yesterday, both men denied being formally served the document.

They maintained their statements when contacted for an update this morning, as Nomination Day activities proceeded as scheduled.

When questioned about Mr. Rowe’s nomination status, Mr. Johnson noted that under the provisions of the Accompong Constitution, he is not qualified to contest the election.

He further explained that the Constitution expressly requires that candidates reside in Accompong or adjoining districts for a minimum of three consecutive years.
