The Electoral Office will begin today the official recount of ballots cast in yesterday’s General and Local Government by Elections.
At the end of the preliminary count last evening the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) received majority votes in 34 constituencies.
The People’s National Party (PNP) polled the most votes in the other 29 constituencies.
The overall preliminary voter turnout is approximately 39.5%.
For the Local Government by-elections, the JLP candidates received majority votes in all three electoral divisions in the Kingston and St. Andrew municipal corporation; Chancery Hall, Olympic Gardens and Denham Town.
The overall preliminary voter turnout for the by-elections is approximately 36.1%.
The final counting of ballots will commence today at designated counting centres.
The returning officers will open each ballot box and count all the ballots cast for the constituency, in the presence of the candidates and/or their representatives.
Consequently, the final count takes a longer period to complete than the preliminary count.
The Electoral Office of Jamaica is urging the public to be patient while the process is completed.
