The man believed to have murdered 14-year-old Tianna Sutherland in St. Thomas was fatally shot by police yesterday.
Sutherland, a United States citizen, was in Jamaica for the summer holidays and was staying with relatives in Blue Mahoe in the parish.
Reports from the Morant Bay Criminal Investigation Branch (CIB) are that the girl was home yesterday when she was reportedly attacked by a man who gained entry through an open grill.
A tussle ensued during which Tianna was stabbed multiple times.
It was alleged she was able to wound her attacker and alert her father by phone.
When her father arrived at the scene, he found his daughter in the kitchen with multiple stab wounds.
She was taken to the hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
Following the incident, reports indicated that residents saw a man running from the house earlier that day.
Further investigations by members of the St. Thomas Operational Support Team (OST) led officers to a nearby concrete dwelling, where they followed a trail of blood that led to bloody clothing.
When the team entered the building, they were attacked by a naked man armed with a machete.
The police say they took evasive action and neutralised the threat.
The building was searched, and Tianna’s phone and jewellery were found on the scene.
The incident was reported to the Inspectorate and Professional Standards Oversight Bureau (IPROB) and the Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM).
