Phillip Paulwell is questioning why the gov’t did not take further action before now in relation to the licence granted to JPS

Opposition Spokesperson on Energy Phillip Paulwell is questioning why the government did not take further action before now in relation to the licence granted to the Jamaica Public Service (JPS).

Energy Minister Daryl Vaz said earlier this week that the government will not renew the JPS’ current all-island licence under the existing terms upon its expiration on July 8, 2027.

The light and power company expressed grave concern following notification from government stating that this development has several implications for the energy sector and for the country in general.

Speaking at a party meeting in Portland last night, Mr. Paulwell who served as energy minister in the PNP administration said the license was modified twice stating that he has been calling for further modification.

Commenting on the high price of electricity, Mr. Paulwell said the then government took action to reduce the price and a future admin.

Meantime he said the government has neglected the energy sector and for that reason they should be voted out of power.

According to him, the JLP administration is only now putting focus on the sector after nine years in government.
