Prime Minister Dr. Andrew Holness has indicated that the government is advancing a deliberate, long-term strategy to make the country self-sufficient in food production.
He was speaking yesterday at the groundbreaking of the Pedro Plains Irrigation Expansion Project in St Elizabeth.
The Prime Minister explained that the irrigation infrastructure being developed is not an isolated investment, but part of a much larger national plan.
Dr. Holness stressed the importance of food security and Jamaica being able to feed itself.
He noted the challenges associated with achieving this feat.
Dr. Holness said the government has taken steps to resolve the challenges, including investing in infrastructure.
