The phased reopening of sections of the Cornwall Regional Hospital in St. James is expected to begin in another two weeks.
This was indicated by Health Minister Dr. Christopher Tufton at yesterday’s meeting of the Standing Finance Committee.
He was responding to concerns raised by opposition Member of Parliament Dr. Morais Guy about a 2027/2028 timeline for completion of the rehabilitation works at the hospital.
Dr. Guy noted that the minister had indicated an earlier date of 2026
Dr. Tufton explained that the expectation is complete the project before the 2027/2028 fiscal year.
The Health Minister said air quality tests have been done at Cornwall Regional.
Meanwhile, Dr. Tufton said there is no increase in the cost for building out the hospital.
Dr. Guy questioned the 25 billion dollars indicated in this budget up from the 21.5 billion announced last budget.
Dr. Tufton said the difference in the amounts relate to taxes on equipment to be imported.
