Fisheries ministry provides multi-million dollar support to fisher folk in Alligator Pond

The Fisheries Ministry, through the National Fisheries Authority, has spent over $5 m in relief support to fisherfolk in Alligator Pond, Manchester.

The fishers had suffered losses following severe weather conditions in February.

Portfolio minister Floyd Green said the support provided to the fishers in Alligator Pond represents the first of many, as other fisher folk in other areas across the country will receive similar support.

He was speaking at the handing over ceremony for the fishers relief programme in Alligator Pond, on Thursday.

The minister said 87 fishers from alligator pond will each receive a $60,000 grant to help them recover.

Mr. Green said the ministry has in place other initiatives to support fisher folk outside of weather events such as the fisheries production incentive programme.
