$1B to be set aside in next budget for water storage projects – Holness
Prime Minister Andrew Holness has indicated that one billion dollars will be set aside in next year’s budget, to facilitate the implementation of small community based water storage projects, especially in rural areas impacted by drought.
In a statement to parliament on Tuesday afternoon, Mr. Holness noted that the country is experiencing the driest period in recorded history, with several water sources adversely affected by the limited rainfall.
He also noted the effect the drought is having on systems operated by the National Water Commission.
He said the government is aware of the issues, and is planning ahead, with the intention to make the funding available next year.
He said the preliminary work for the projects need to start now.
These include, identifying the water sources and procurement of material.
