The Jamaican authorities have accounted for 178 Jamaicans in the Middle East amidst continued tensions in the region.

Foreign Affairs Minister Kamina Johnson Smith gave the update at Jamaica House this morning.

There has been an escalation of the war in the region since Saturday, when the United States and Israel struck Iran, killing its Supreme Leader.

Jamaica’s High Commissioner to India, Jason Hall, who is accredited to Qatar and the United Arab Emirates, has urged Jamaicans there to submit their information to ensure they are accounted for in the event of an emergency.

Mrs. Johnson Smith gave a breakdown of the number of Jamaicans who have so far made themselves known.

She said some Jamaicans have been able to flee impacted countries, as commercial flights become available in certain areas.

However, she is urging people to prioritise their safety when considering available flight options.

Meanwhile, Mrs. Johnson Smith said the Jamaican Government continues to monitor, with concern, the rapidly evolving security situation in the Middle East.

She again urged calm and for people to avoid all travel to the region.

The Foreign Affairs Minister is also cautioning individuals to get information relating to the conflict from official sources.
