The Portland Police have charged a 12-year-old boy who was seen in a viral video physically assaulting another boy at school.

The child, whose name cannot be published as he is a minor, has been charged with assault occasioning  bodily harm. 

The bullying incident occurred on the compound of a primary school in Portland last Thursday September 12.

The boy was charged yesterday.

The police statement says in the 47-second video, the 12-year-old was seen shoving, punching and kicking the other boy.

Following the incident, the matter was reported to the police and an investigation was launched.

The matter will be brought before the children’s court at a later date. 

Yesterday, the Education Ministry announced that it had moved swiftly to enact a series of critical interventions at the  school, in response to the recent incident of bullying.

The six pronged intervention will see immediate actions being taken including the school overhauling its safety and security protocols to ensure that children are under vigilant supervision, particularly during non-class hours.

Additionally, the Education Ministry says it has launched a comprehensive anti-bullying campaign.

Education Minister Fayval Williams has issued a strong condemnation of what she describes as the deeply troubling bullying incident, calling it an appalling breach of student safety and human decency. 

Mrs. Williams said  the education ministry will leave no stone unturned in the efforts to eradicate this behaviour from schools.
