The Government says the necessary steps are being taken to facilitate a smooth rollout of 110 rural school buses in the new academic year.
Transport Minister Daryl Vaz gave the assurance, following concerns from his opposition counterpart about the progress of repairs on the buses.
The Transport Ministry said it is actively monitoring the readiness of the rural school bus fleet, with Mr. Vaz adding that he will continue to monitor the progress and provide a further update on the fleet’s overall readiness before the new school term begins.
Mr. Vaz noted that the school buses were deployed for last year’s reopening of schools, and that this achievement will be improved on this year.
According to the minister, the repair programme, which is led by El-Hydro limited, commenced during the summer break.
It involves the company working to address maintenance issues and ensure units are in operable condition, ahead of the September reopening of schools.
He stresses that the Government is not taking a casual approach to the operational readiness of the fleet and that the necessary attention is being given to outstanding maintenance issues.
