Opposition Spokesman on National Security, Fitz Jackson is questioning comments by National Security Minister Dr Horace Chang, on the role of the police in enforcing the court order that led to the displacement of families in Cooper’s Pen, Trelawny.
During a recent radio interview, Dr Chang noted that the land owners had the right to seek the support of the police to take over the property.
He added that if the police had not supported the owners, they would have been in contempt of the court.
However, Mr Jackson said while court orders must be respected and obeyed, the existence of such an order does not absolve the state of its responsibility to protect human life and treat affected citizens with dignity.
According to Mr Jackson, the minister’s comments risk fortifying negative perceptions of the police.
