UHWI says A&E department experiencing patient volumes beyond its normal capacity

The University Hospital of the West Indies (UHWI) says its Accident and Emergency (A&E) department is experiencing patient volumes beyond its normal capacity.
As a result, it says patients turning up at the A&E department should expect longer than usual waiting times, particularly those with conditions assessed as less urgent.
Late last month the UHWI advised that it was experiencing a significant increase in the number of patients presenting to and being admitted through its emergency services.
In its latest advisory indicating that the a&e is now beyond normal capacity the hospital says patients will continue to be prioritised based on the severity of their condition, with the most critically ill receiving immediate attention.
The hospital is assuring that the A&E department remains operational, and its medical, nursing and support teams are continuing to attend to patients requiring emergency care.
The UHWI is asking the public to exercise patience and understanding during this period and encourages persons with non-emergency conditions to consider accessing their nearest health centre or primary care provider, where appropriate.
