Technical officers from the Education Ministry are conducting an assessment at Balcombe Drive Primary School, in St Andrew, after a section of the building collapsed on two workmen yesterday.

One of the men reportedly died at the scene, while the other is receiving urgent medical care in hospital.

In a statement, the Ministry expressed regret about the incident.

It’s reported that at about 2 P.M., a section of a corridor connecting classrooms, which was undergoing refurbishment work collapsed on the workmen who were actively engaged in the project.

The Ministry said the police, fire brigade, and other emergency personnel responded swiftly to the scene.

One labourer was crushed by the falling debris and pronounced dead by emergency responders.

The Ministry said the second worker sustained serious injuries and was immediately transported to the hospital.

Classes were not in session at the time of the collapse, so no student was on the compound.

The Ministry said it has dispatched a team of counsellors and social support officers to assist the school family, and the contractor community affected by the tragedy.
