The University of the West Indies (UWI) has signed key salary and compensation framework agreements with the University and Allied Workers Union and the Mona Administrative and Technical Staff Association.
In a statement, UWI says, the Staff Association signed the agreement on August 21, while the Trade Union signed yesterday.
The UWI says the agreements pave the way for implementation of the revised salary structure, with payments at the new salary rates already commencing for affected staff.
The agreements include acceptance of the Ernst and Young study, consolidation of the existing salary scales, introduction of revised salary bands, and placement of posts from the existing structure onto the appropriate bands within the new salary structure.
The parties have also accepted the market study and agreed on the methodology, or conversion rule, that will be used to migrate each member of staff from their current salary scale to the appropriate band within the new structure.
UWI also agreed on handling allowances during conversion.
Specific allowances will remain separate from basic salary and will continue until phased out.
The University notes that based on the agreements reached, the Ministry of Finance has confirmed and made available the necessary funds to facilitate payments under the revised framework.
It says MONATS members were paid at the new salary rate on August 25, while UAWU members are scheduled to receive payment at the new salary rate today.
Discussions will continue on some remaining matters, including the effective date for retroactive application and the timing of the related back payments.
University Professor John Lindo said management is pleased to have reached this stage, as negotiations were difficult and extensive.
Professor Lindo noted that this agreement allows the parties to move forward together and maintain their focus on the university’s core mission of teaching and research.
