Gov’t assessing community mediation practices in Singapore to see how best some can be implemented in Jamaica

The Government is assessing community mediation practices in Singapore to see how best some can be implemented in Jamaica’s justice system.
The assessment is among several activities to be undertaken in the south-east Asian country by Justice Minister Delroy Chuck and members of the Dispute Resolution Foundation (DRF).
The delegation is participating in the Singapore Convention Week, which started yesterday and will continue until Friday, August 28.
Mr. Chuck says Jamaica’s participation is in support of the Government’s push towards strengthening the nation’s mediation framework.
He emphasises that the Convention establishes a critical international enforcement framework for mediated settlements, much like the New York Convention does for the recognition and enforcement of foreign arbitration awards.
He adds that the delegation’s presence in Singapore is part of plans to expand the use of Alternative Dispute Resolution as an efficient, accessible and cost-effective complement to litigation.
