Spain were crowned champions of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after defeating defending champions Argentina 1–0 in the final on Sunday in New Jersey.

In a fiercely contested match, tempers flared as Argentina collected four yellow cards and finished with 10 men after Enzo Fernández was sent off for a second booking in stoppage time of extra time. Spain dominated the contest from start to finish, peppering the Argentine goal with a barrage of shots.

Argentina’s goalkeeper, Emiliano Martínez, delivered a heroic performance to keep his side in the match and was deservedly named Man of the Match. Martínez made a World Cup final-record 10 saves during regulation time and finished the match with 11 saves overall.

Lionel Messi was largely kept quiet throughout the encounter, while Argentina failed to register a single shot on target in 94 minutes against the Spanish defence.

With more than 80,000 fans in attendance, the match appeared destined for a penalty shootout despite Spain’s overwhelming possession and numerous scoring opportunities. However, substitute Ferran Torres finally broke the deadlock in the 106th minute, firing a powerful close-range finish past Martínez to secure Spain’s second FIFA World Cup title.

Spain pocketed 51 Million Dollars for winning the title, and Argentina was awarded 34 million dollars.

The title marks the second for Spain after winning thier first crown in 2010, with a similar one nil win over Netherlands in south Africa.

France’s Kylian Mbappe, meanwhile won the golden boot race with 10 goals.
