Finance spokesman Robinson outlines PNP proposals for addressing cost of living concerns
The next People’s National Party administration will implement changes to the repayment system for student loans, as part of efforts to address cost of living concerns.
Spokesman on finance Julian Robinson outlined a proposed multi-tier approach to the cost of living problem, while making his contribution to the budget debate in parliament, today.
One tier of the targeted policy will focus on young people, another on parents with children, and then the elderly.
For the youth, the plan is to extend the post graduate moratorium for persons who borrow money from the Students Loan Bureau (SLB).
Mr. Robinson added that the plan also includes allowing students to make adjustments to their loan repayment amount, based on their income.
He explained that this variation in repayment will allow students to keep a good credit score.
Meantime, the second proposal by the PNP to address cost of living concerns will be the Ensuring Adequate Sustenance for Education (EASE) programme.
Robinson lamented that many children go to school hungry, or don’t go at all due to parents not having money for bus fare or lunch.
He explained that the EASE programme will assist all needy persons, not just individuals on the Programme of Advancement Through Health and Education (PATH).
And, the third cost of living proposal, relates to helping elderly citizens with their water bills, by having them pay a flat rate to the National Water Commission (NWC).
