The official trailer for a new movie starring renowned comedian Oliver Samuels has been released.
The film titled Sugar Dumplin, tells the story about a father who is struggling with dementia and his daughter’s desires to reconnect with him by creating food from his Caribbean childhood.
In scenes shared in the trailer, a visibly upset Samuels who plays the character Desmond, uses authentic patois to communicate with a frustrated daughter, Ebony, played by Jamaican Canadian actress Chantel Riley, telling her not to touch him, while cowering in fear.
Other scenes revealed care givers telling Ebony of Desmond’s problematic behaviour, driving her to resort to creating Caribbean cuisine with the hope of making a connection with her father.
The movie, produced by Mid-Career Productions was directed by Tristan Barrocks and addresses themes of food and culture, family, mental health and the impact of dementia.
The film is a celebration of family, culture, and legacy and captures the rich flavours, deep-rooted traditions, and heartfelt moments shared in a typical black family.
