Beenie Man gets backlash from Trinidadians
Dancehall icon, Beenie Man is receiving backlash from Trinidadians on social media.
The backlash stems from what social media users are calling insulting comments the artiste made on a recent Drink Champs interview about Doubles, one of their most beloved street foods. In the interview, Beenie Man shared that while Doubles is nice, he doesn’t eat it because dogs don’t.
Among the twin island’s nationals apparently taking offence to the comments made by Beenie Man is Dr Amery Browne, Trinidad & Tobago’s Foreign and Caricom Affairs Minister.
Taking to Facebook, the minister posted a photograph of himself delighting in the delicacy, from a vendor’s stall. He captioned his post with an emoji of the Trinidad and Tobago flag and the words Sim Simma, a hook line from Beenie Man’s 1996 hit song, Girls Dem Sugar.
Beenie Man’s revelation stemmed from being asked to name the best island in the world, as expected, he said Jamaica. When asked which island was best outside of Jamaica, he picked Jamaica again but added that he loved Trinidad.
The discussion about Trinidad and Tobago progressed into him being asked whether he eats doubles. This was where he made the dreadful revelation breaking the hearts of his Trini fans. With many saying he could have been more diplomatic in his rejection of the street side delicacy
