National Security Minister, Dr. Horace Chang, has pointed-out, that robbers in Montego Bay, St. James, tend to target anyone handling large amounts of cash, not just the Chinese business operators.
This, after a string of robberies in the second city in recent weeks, with at least one of them, involving the loss of lives.
That incident occurred yesterday (March 10), in which a money courier and his security escort, were attacked, and shot dead by armed robbers.
Reports are that the courier worked for a Chinese business operator in Montego Bay, and had just picked-up millions of dollars in cash, from a chain of outlets.
In previous incidents, armed robbers entered Chinese operated stores, and stole cash, and goods.
These robberies were captured on CCTV cameras, and the videos circulated on social media.
Dr. Chang explained, that the impression of the Chinese being targeted, may result from the fact, that the majority of businesses in Down Town Montego Bay, are operated by them.
The Security Minister lamented, that once again the lack of a state of emergency, has allowed criminal elements to take advantage of the situation.
He said when the SOE was in effect, crime in western parishes generally, was kept at a low level.
