Cold water has been poured on the government’s stance that the National Identification System, NIDS was crucial to fighting crime.
Opposition Senator and Attorney-at-law Donna Scott Mottley says there was never mention of it being a crime fighting tool.
She says the government is taking advantage of the citizens by stating that the opposition was against dealing with crime and violence.
She pointed-out that the Joint Select Committee set-up to consider the Data Protection Act has been stalled.
It was agreed, that a Data Protection Act would have been needed before the passage of NIDS, due to the volume of information that would be captured.
She questioned the sincerity of the government.
