West Indies go down to Australia in first ODI at Arnos Vale
The now familiar dramatic batting collapse saw the West Indies crash to a 64 run loss to Australia in the opening One Day International at the Arnos Vale Ground in St. Vincent to give the touring Australians a 1-0 lead in the five match series.
The Windies spearheaded by a Marlon Samuels who struck 3 sixes and two fours in his topscore of 35, were responding positively at 97 for to the visitor’s score of 204.
However in dramatic fashion the Windies lost 6 wickets for 7 runs to be left reeling at 104 for 9, before a cameo from captain Darren Sammy who scored 35 from 28 balls in a 36 run last wicket stand with Kemar Roach saw the hosts to 140 all out in 32 overs and two balls.
Dwayne Bravo who hit 5 fours and a six got 32, while debutant Johnson Charles who was the only other West Indian batsman to get to double figures, fell for 13.
Xavier Doherty 4 for 49 got most wickets for the Aussies, with Dan Christian picking up 2 for 12 and Clint McKay 2 for 22.
The Aussies who batted first posted 204 for 8 from their 50 overs.
Dwayne Bravo 3 for 58, Kemar Roach 2 for 33 and Marlon Samuels 2 for 22 got the wickets for the Windies along with Sunil Narine who claimed his first ODI wicket sending back Mathew Wade for a first ball duck.
Man of The Match on his ODI debut George Bailey topscored for Australia with 48 from 67 balls.
David Warner got 40 and Mike Hussey 32 while putting on 63 for the 5th wicket, after Warner and Peter Forrest who hit 26 had put on 60 for the second wicket.
The West Indies have now lost 10 of their last 11 ODI’s to Australia.
The second match in the series will also be at Arnos Vale on Sunday.
