Jamaican team to Olympics to be named on Tuesday
Jamaica's team for the 2012 London Olympic Games will be dominated by medallist from the Beijing Olympics in 2008.
The team to be headed by double sprint world record holder Usain Bolt who suffered defeats in both the men’s 100 and 200 metre events at the Jamaican National Championships on the weekend is being finalised by the Neville ‘Teddy’ McCook chaired selection panel which also includes JAAA General Secretary Garth Gayle, Charlie Fuller and Glen Mills.
The squad which will be ratified by the JAAA on Tuesday will be handed to the Jamaica Olympic Association.
In the meantime, Bolt is among 25 automatic qualifiers on the men’s team along with world champion Yohan Blake, who won the Jamaican sprint double ahead of Bolt, while women’s sprint double champion Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce heads the 24 automatic female qualifiers.
The list of automatic qualifiers also include Travis Smikle and Jason Morgan in the men’s discuss, Dorian Scott and O'dayne Richards in the men’s shott put, Damar Forbes in the men’s long jump, Hansle Parchment, Andrew Riley and Richard Phillips in the 110m hurdles, Josef Robertson, Roxroy Cato and Leford Green in the men’s 400m hurdles, Blake Bolt and Warren Weir for the men’s 200m and Blake, Bolt and Asafa Powell for the men’s 100m.
Nesta Carter, Kemar Bailey Cole and Michael Frater completes the line-up for the men’s 4 by 100m relay team.
Dane Hyatt, Rusheen McDonald and national record holder Jermaine Gonzales are the automatic selections for the men’s 400m and will be joined by Ricker Hylton, Edino Steele and Errol Nolan for the 4x400 metres relay team.
On the women’s side, Fraser-Pryce, Veronica Campbell-Brown and Kerron Stewart are the automatic qualifiers for the 100m, with Sherone Simpson, Schillonie Calvert and Samantha Henry-Robinson completing the sprint relay team.
Fraser-Pryce, Simpson and Campbell-Brown are the top three for the 200m event.
For the 400m it will be Novelene Williams-Mills, Rosemarie Whyte and Christine Day with Shericka Williams, Dominique Blake and Shereefa Lloyd to join them for the 4x4 team.
Kenia Sinclair is the only automatic qualifier for the women’s 800m and in the 100m hurdles, Bridgette Foster-Hylton, Latoya Greaves and Shermaine Williams are the automatic qualifiers.
Melaine Walker, Kaliese Spencer and Nickesia Wilson are down for the women’s 400m hurdles, Kimberley Williams and Trecia Smith in the triple jump. Allison Randall with the ‘B’ standard for the discuss and Korine Hinds and Mardrea Hyman also with the ‘B’ standard for the 3000m steeplechase.
