THE WINNER FOR THE TARRUS RILEY IRIE FM FREEDOM WRITER’S COMPETITION HAS BEEN ANNOUNCED.

THE WINNING ENTRY WAS A POEM ENTITLED “JAMAICA, MY AFRICA” BY MARIALA NATION, A GRADE 10 STUDENT AT MOUNT ALVERNIA HIGH SCHOOL, MONTEGO BAY.

THERE WERE THREE OTHER OUTSTANDING ENTRIES THAT WERE IN THE RUNNING, BUT UNFORTUNATELY WERE INELIGIBLE BECAUSE THEY EXCEEDED THE 150 WORD LIMIT; HOWEVER, THEY WERE SO GOOD THAT THEY’VE RECEIVED AN “IRIE FM HONOURABLE MENTION”.

CONGRATULATIONS TO MARIALA NATION AND ALL THE ENTRANTS. THE VOICE AND SOUL OF YOUNG JAMAICA IS STRONG AND EVIDENT.

ENTRANTS WERE ASKED TO WRITE AN ORIGINAL POEM OR SONG LYRICS ON THE THEME OF BLACK HISTORY IN NO MORE THAN 150 WORDS.

About IRIE FM

The station officially went on air on August 1, 1990. Reggae in the morning, Reggae in the evening, Reggae in the night was the cry. Critics said it was impossible to sustain a 24-hour Reggae music station. In fact, so strong was the impact, it proved that this format was something the Jamaican public yearned for. The 'little station that could' got all media houses in Jamaica to stand up and take note.
