MARCUS GARVEY CELEBRATIONS ACROSS THE ISLAND

Celebrations are being held across the island to commemorate the 122nd anniversary of the birth of Jamaica’s first National Hero, Marcus Mosiah Garvey.

Liberty Hall: the legacy of Marcus Garvey under the auspices of the institute of Jamaica unveiled the Marcus Garvey bust and Liberty Hall story board at 76 King Street, Kingston this morning.

Meanwhile, Lawrence Park in St. Ann’s Bay is abuzz with a civic ceremony to commemorate the 122nd anniversary of the birth of Marcus Mosiah Garvey and to celebrate his 45th anniversary as a National Hero.  The theme for the celebration that is presently underway is Garvey, A Man With A Mission.

And later this evening, the UNIA is staging a Marcus Garvey Awards at the Jamaica Pegasus, New Kingston. The event will feature performances from Queen Ifrika, Perfect and Warrior King among others. Proceeds are in aid of the UNIA charities.

While on Wednesday August 19, there will be a panel discussion on Garvey’s political legacy at the PCJ auditorium commencing at 6pm.

Marcus Garvey's memory has been kept alive.  Schools, colleges, highways, and buildings in Africa, Europe, the Caribbean, and the United States have been named in his honor. Just this morning, Market Street in St. Ann’s Bay, Garvey’s birth place was renamed Marcus Garvey Way.

Marcus Garvey was born on August 17, 1887 and died in London, England on June 10, 1940.
