Buju Banton is today celebrating his 38th birthday behind the walls of a minimum security Federal prison in the United States.

Buju who was born Mark Anthony Myrie this day in 1973, was sentenced to 10 years last month. According to a U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration affidavit, the international reggae entertainer and two others tried to buy cocaine from an undercover officer.

Just last week Buju Banton’s lawyer, David Markus filed for an appeal contesting the 10 year sentence. Markus claims the evidence to convict Buju Banton on the drug count was insufficient.

The Grammy award winning entertainer is expected to pursuit his Master's Degree while behind bars in the areas of Political Science and Economics.

The station officially went on air on August 1, 1990. Reggae in the morning, Reggae in the evening, Reggae in the night was the cry. Critics said it was impossible to sustain a 24-hour Reggae music station. In fact, so strong was the impact, it proved that this format was something the Jamaican public yearned for. The 'little station that could' got all media houses in Jamaica to stand up and take note.
