NWA to enforce one way through Fern Gully

The National Works Agency (NWA) says the one way system implemented through the Fern Gully last year is being strictly enforced.

In a statement this morning (June 19) the agency says, motorists travelling from the direction of Ocho Rios, heading towards Moneague are advised to use the Breadnut Hill Road.

Meanwhile, motorists travelling from the direction of Moneague are allowed to travel through the Fern Gully.

Communications Manager at the NWA Stephen Shaw, says that only small vehicles should use the Fern Gully Main Road at this time, as the road-width has been significantly reduced.

No trucks or buses should attempt using the roadway, as drivers run the risk of serious accidents.

Operators of such vehicles wishing to travel to the town of Ocho Rios from the direction of Moneague should use the alternative route through Chalky Hill.

The Agency says the reinstitution of the one way system along the corridor comes against the background of the intensification of efforts to complete phase three of the Fern Gully rehabilitation project.

The phase involves the construction of a 1.4 km long concrete “U” drain and the erection of five box culverts, between Harrison Town and Milford Road in Ocho Rios.

Mr. Shaw says that heavy equipment working on the road will cause possible delays when traversing the area. Motorists should therefore make allocations for increased travel times.

Mr. Shaw says the works being undertaken in the Fern Gully will complement the 1.6 km concrete pavement that has been significantly completed and is expected to mitigate flooding in the town of Ocho Rios.

The concrete pavement was done as Phase 2 of the overall project, which is being done at a cost of over $600 m.
