Industry Minister willing to meet with scrap metal stakeholders
The Industry Ministry says it's willing to meet with scrap metal dealers next week, regarding their call for the immediate reopening of the sector.
Several members of the trade, reportedly dressed in black, protested in front of the Ministry this morning (August 16) demanding the resumption of the trade.
The scrap metal trade was suspended indefinitely, following concerns that it was encouraging the theft of pieces of metal, from several national infrastructure and private property.
Industry Ministry Anthony Hylton who is off the island, had stated that the trade will resume, but with a number of recommendations approved by Cabinet.
These include the establishment of central scrap metal processing and loading sites and the erection of a police and customs post at the site.
But, President of the Scrap Metal Federation, Jonathan Aarons had expressed concern that the proposed site at the Riverton City Landfill, raises several security and health risks.
