Dynamite possible cause Negril river fish kill
The National Environment and Planning Agency (NEPA), says investigations revealed that persons may have been using dynamite to harvest fish, which resulted in the kill on May 10.
In a statement this afternoon, NEPA says fish samples taken from the river were analysed by the pesticide and life sciences laboratories at the University of the West Indies (UWI).
Results indicate that the fish were impacted by some type of explosion, which suggests the possibility of dynamiting.
NEPA is reminding persons that the use of dynamite to harvest fish is a dangerous activity, as it may cause harm to human health and the environment.
NEPA further notes that it is an offence under section 10 of the wild life protection act, to use dynamite with the intent to take, injure or kill fish.
