20 % drop in road fatalities this quarter

The country has seen a 20 % drop in road fatalities for the first three months of this year, when compared to the same period, last year.

Transport and Works Minister, Dr. Omar Davies says if the reduction is maintained, then Jamaica would be poised to see below 300 deaths by year end.

The Minister did not reveal the number of persons killed in traffic accidents for the first quarter.

In the meantime, Dr. Davies says the Ministry has acquired road marking equipment, and has erected additional traffic signs to enhance safety on the roadways.

He points-out that stakeholders in the sector should take keen interest in asset management, as the region is prone to natural disasters, which have an effect on the road network.

The Minister was speaking this morning (May 9) at the First International Road Federation Regional Caribbean Congress in Montego Bay, St. James.

About IRIE FM

The station officially went on air on August 1, 1990. Reggae in the morning, Reggae in the evening, Reggae in the night was the cry. Critics said it was impossible to sustain a 24-hour Reggae music station. In fact, so strong was the impact, it proved that this format was something the Jamaican public yearned for. The 'little station that could' got all media houses in Jamaica to stand up and take note.
