Health Ministry probes hospitals’ handling of rape victims

The Health and Wellness Ministry is to undertake a review of the circumstances under which a mother and her two daughters, were reportedly turned away from one hospital and denied attention for several hours at another when they went for a rape kit exam.

Health Minister Dr. Christopher Tufton has convened a panel, including representatives from the leadership of the South East Regional Health Authority and the Southern Regional Health Authority, to review the incident.

The review is to determine what breaches took place and what action is to be taken.

The ministry says its gravely concerned about the incident.

Media reports are that the three women were raped by gunmen at their St. Catherine home last month.

Its further reported that the three females were taken by police to the May Pen Hospital in Clarendon which was said to be closest to their home. However its alleged they were instructed to go to the Spanish Town Hospital as the incident happened in St. Catherine.

Further reports are that the rape kit exam was done hours later.
