Noted Attorney, Bert Samuels has described the striking down of the National Identification and Registration Act by the Constitutional Court, as a public education awareness victory.
On Friday, (April 12) the court ruled that the regulation had several violations of constitutional rights and freedoms, including the compulsory taking of bio-metric data, and criminalization of persons, who decide against getting registered.
The opposition had challenged aspects of the act as being unconstitutional.
The court said the regulation was null and void and of no legal effect.
Mr. Samuels who spoke on Irie- Fm’s Africa Forum this morning (April 14), said the ruling by the court brings awareness to the people.
