The opposition People’s National Party says its candidate for South East St Mary Dr Shane Alexis will formalize his Jamaican citizenship immediately.

The party announced the development in a statement this morning.

It comes as the PNP addresses concern over the citizenship of Dr Alexis who is its candidate for South East St Mary.

It was revealed yesterday that Dr Alexis was born in Canada.

IRIE FM NEWS spoke with Dr Alexis this morning.

The Jamaica Labour Party is questioning why Dr Alexis is not making an effort, to become a naturalized Jamaican citizen, if he chooses to serve the people of Jamaica.

Today the PNP reiterated that Dr Alexis was duly nominated, as the constitution allows for persons born in commonwealth countries to sit in the houses of parliament.

According to the PNP Dr Alexis is a registered voter who has consistently voted in elections since 2008.

Dr Alexis was born in Canada and has been residing in Jamaica since age two.

The PNP says having been granted permanent residency since 1987, he is married to a Jamaican and lives here with his family and will formalize his Jamaican citizenship immediately.

The opposition also highlights that Dr Alexis has given outstanding service in public health to Jamaicans.

Meanwhile, Chairman of the PNP Fitz Jackson says it was not an oversight in not declaring Dr Alexis’ citizenship status.
